Excerpt from Haunted Mansion

Brenna Roy

Grade six

A bolt of lighting looks as if it's right in front of me, blinding me. Well, this is a Halloween gone bad. My ninja costume is getting soaked because of this rain and the only house nearby is a mansion that everybody knows is haunted! Suddenly, there's a large clap of thunder and I almost jump out of my skin. That haunted mansion looks pretty inviting now. I guess that'll have to do. I take quick stairs up the concrete steps to the mansion, rain soaking me all the way. I look at the dark wooden door in front of me and gulp before I wiggle the knob. It feels very cold on my wet hands. The door flies open with a loud creak and I leap back. I lean forward and take tiny little steps inside. I look around the room. I shut the door behind me. It smells musty and old inside. I can actully taste the dust. I grope the wall for a light switch. I flick something on and after my eyes adjust, they drift towards a long, winding staircase.
