They Told Me
Gillian Klase, Grade 8
(In the perspective of a teenage Jewish girl.)
They told me I was lucky.
They told me I was chosen by God.
They told me I was what they wanted.
What they told me,
Was a lie.
They told me my name was Klara.
My name is Abby.
They told me I was a Nazi.
I am Jewish.
They told me I was the makings of a race.
A perfect race.
Yet I am not a piece of their puzzle.
I am not a pawn in their game.
I am me.
Do not question them.
Do not speak out.
Do not stop them.
For what they are doing is renewing the world.
In their eyes.
Would I dare query those who saved me?
Those who snatched me out of deaths
Cold
Dark clutch.
No.
For what they said was what was done.
No question.
No exception.
Or that is what they thought.
I don't want to be a German.
I don't want to be Klara.
I don't want to be a Nazi.
I don't want to be Aryan.
I just want to be me.
So I will question what is done.
I will dare to deny them.
I will speak my opinion.
My name is Abby.
I am a Jew.
I do have a say.
I am not Aryan,
And I am proud.
