Equus Literary Magazine

Never

Home is where the heart is

A stupid saying

But how true it is

A place with good tomes

Bad times

And all the in-between

Now

Yelling, Screaming

Always turned against each other

Stuck in my mind

Like blood on a black canvas

I never thought

To think of good

Now it is all I can hold onto

I used to yell at you

Nuisance!

Annoying!

Useless!

What I wouldn't give now to just

Hold you

Say

It's going to be okay

Because you need someone to lie to you once in a while

I stare into the distance, imagining you

Intimidated by brutal soldiers, all with something to prove

Alone in the cold, a father no longer there for shelter and comfort

Waiting

For your turn

To die

I must hope

But how, when there is nothing left to hope for?

My heart is reaching

Searching

For you

In the never-ending thunder

In the clouds

In their footsteps

I will neve cease my search

I refuse to let them take my one hope away

Take you away

Never.
