Exerpt from "The Test"

by Kobe Onye in Grade 8

The next day, I went to my new complex of weird looking plastic homes of the future. We watched a video introducing us to our new homes and their amazing new features. It had a peppy announcer on it that gladly showcased the new features. It said, “These homes may look small, but you’ll quickly see that they have amazing potential, and can seem even bigger! Our future vision at Onye Industries is at the center of these homes.....”  I won’t bore you with the rest. We had to start living in these homes today. They were kind of small and only had a chair plus some moving around space in them. Naturally, each of us were assigned our own home to move in. Mine had a bit more moving space in it so I could at least walk around, which was a huge relief. When I walked in, the home greeted me in a robotic female voice which I could change if I felt like it.

“Hello Joseph, or should I call you Joe? You may speak to reply.”

     “Joe is fine,” I said.

“Okay Joe, I’ll make your favorite beverage and unpack your things while you choose your preferences. You may call me Isis.”

She made me a delicious strawberry milkshake while I went through the process. It was an hour long and covered everything from what interests I have to how warm or cold I wanted my water. Later, it showed me my Home Board, which is a large looking screen surrounding my home that showed me my special food options, advertisements to go shopping, new music from my favorite bands, what’s on TV, and everything else related to my comfort and enjoyment. I was about to fall asleep, but Isis said that even though the area is small and more of an eyesore, I can make it look like I was in space, the clouds, or any place comforting enough for me to sleep in. I chose to make it appear like I was in space, so I fell asleep instantly.

The next day, I was jolted awake by a peppy song, “Wake Up!” by The Risers. I kept hearing,

“Gotta get up, up, up, up! Start feeling the rush, rush, rush, rush!”

Isis said, “Do you like the way I woke you up today, Joe? I’ll choose a surprise song for tomorrow, too.”

I asked what Isis can do for me besides waking me up and making food, so she told me that she is my personal assistant and can be asked anything.

“Isis stands for Intelligent Servant and Information Service. Now stop asking me so many questions and choose breakfast. What would you like?”

I was shown a large breakfast menu with any breakfast item you could think of. I was stunned with the vast amount of food that there was. I chose my favorite breakfast, delicious double stack pancakes. While I was eating breakfast, I started asking Isis multiple questions to test how responsive her system was.

I said, "How much do you know me?"

"I only know a little about you, but I think we should make great friends."

That sense of trust was broken the next day.
